Inspired by the picture-perfect beach just off our bow, and satisfied that we had done enough boat chores for the day, Rebecca and I dinghied to shore on Ilet Pinel yesterday for a late-afternoon stroll. It only just dawned on me during this walk how often we end up anchoring in places like this, often without much planning, where the average tourist takes greats steps to visit. For example, I did a little research and found that, as of yesterday, Trip Advisor has 71 reviews for Pinel Island, the vast majority of them being 4 and 5 stars. We have witnessed a non-stop parade of shuttles running back and forth between the island and the mainland, ferrying men, women and kids to the beach so that they can play in the sun. Being that it’s Christmas holidays, I’m guessing that at least a portion of them are locals looking to enjoy the paradise more typically dominated by tourists. Good for them!

As you can see from the pics below, beyond the quite-developed beach area, the island is pretty rugged. There is a marked trail that runs the perimeter of the island with a few nice signs explaining the geography and the wildlife. If nothing else, it sure is a pretty backdrop for some photography!

  2. Wow those pictures are beautiful!! How neat to be right there when tourists spend days trying to arrive. Is ZTC anchored in one of the pics above?

  4. Yet another beautiful island! No wonder so many people cruise that area for years. Looks like 2012 will be another fantastic year for the both of you … hope it’s a year for us to get a little closer!
