Yesterday was the first class in our previously described Seamanship Course. If a picture speaks a thousand words…

OK, maybe that is exaggerating (a bit). The initial lesson was a tiny bit disjointed due to the fact that no one had their manuals yet. We did spend some time on how to go back and forth between true and magnetic bearings, factoring in both variation and deviation. This is something that we covered in classes a year ago but having had no practice since that time, it was very muddy!

Rebecca and I are both optimistic that this course will be very helpful for us. Even though there were some four letter words thrown around prior to the class starting (test, exam) I’m sure it will all work out. 🙂

  1. I’m not with Offshore Sailing School anymore so the following is not a commercial even though it may sound like one. Their NYC School in Jersey City is in a marina (Liberty Landing ?) with great facilities, noisy close bar (corner of Warren&Essex ?) and is the ferry terminus to NYC – just a short walk to transportation and all the city has to offer. Call them up and have a chat. You’ll get better details than I can recall right now, fuzzy memory that I have.
On another tack, the September ’09 issue of Cruising World has two articles about getting to the Caribbean.
    Fair winds.

    • Thanks very much for the tips, Capt. Mike. I’ll definitely call them, and look up that magazine (I might have a copy).

Hopefully we’ll cross paths some day when we are “out there.”
