They say that everything on a boat needs to serve more than one purpose. Obviously that is a bit too simplistic but the concept is sound. There’s not a lot of room on a boat and the more jobs an item can accomplish the more valuable it becomes.

One of our recent acquisitions is a bright orange inflatable mooring ball. Why would we want such a thing? We first read about the idea of keeping one onboard on our surveyor’s Tips & Tricks For New Boat Owners page (there are some other good tips on that link too). When I saw in a pic that our friends in the Caribbean had a couple of them on their boat too, they shared with us that they used the balls to help prevent any damage when they dragged anchor into another boat during a tropical storm! Because we had the room for one and they are relatively inexpensive (especially when compared to hull damage!) we decided to invest, thinking that it would be pretty cheap insurance. But what about that second use…?

How about as a Swiss (physio, exercise) ball?

It works. Hopefully it will get a lot more use like this than it will preventing damage during crashes!

  1. Do you know that sex burns 1500 calories….Must be why I keep putting on weight!

  2. 2 big bright orange mooring balls are on our list too …. but it didn’t dawn on me to use them as an exercise balls! Fantastic idea. Thanks!

  3. I think I speak for most of the anonymous lurkers here when I say: Awesome abdominals!

I propose to you that, like a good workout, abdominals should be a regular part of a good blog.

  4. I saw that there’s a picture of your boat on the Captain’s Choice services page. http://www.marinesurveyor.com/hutchings/services.html

  5. TRX and an orange fishing boat fender sure beats the arrangement I saw on an Endeavor at anchor in Port Madison last year: The guy laboriously hauled a treadmill out and set it up on the bow. Then he and his dog proceeded to briskly walk in place there on the bow. And no setup/tear down either.

You guys ought to figure out a way to use your calorie burning exercise to generate electricity. Who needs solar panels?

Stationary bike? Put regular bike in stand, pedal like he&* to generate electricity! 🙂
