The other day I posted about nudity while cruising, and being aware of and respecting the cultural differences of certain islands. The post gained a number of comments and in addition to that, I saw from our stats page that the link to the post was also shared on a couple of different forums. For the record, please feel free to post the link to our website on any related forums if you feel that the topic of a post fits a discussion there. Anyway, speaking of nudity/clothing and cultural differences, how’s this for an opposite approach, the Facekini, a fashion item now popular in China. I wonder what one of these would look like when worn along with a Conch Republic Bikini?

In more valuable news, our friends at Uncommon Caribbean have launched a new @GoDomRep Week Sweepstakes, offering readers the chance to win a weeklong stay at a private beachfront villa in Carabete on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, plus a few cool inclusions perfectly-suited for uncommon travel. The grand prize includes one (1) seven-day/six-night EP stay for two (2) persons at Casa Velada, one (1) half-day excursion to Ciguapa Falls with Iguana Mama for two (2) persons, and four (4) hours of kiteboarding instruction spread over two (2) days with Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding. The sweepstakes is open through June 2, 2013. For complete rules and details on how to enter, visit the @GoDomRep Week Sweepstakes page on UncommonCaribbean.com.

  1. Presumably the rationale for wearing the face-kini is to keep one’s face as non-tanned as possible.

In her years as a trainer in the cosmetic industry (Enro Lazlo, Lauder, Arden) my wife came across many situations where the Asian customers were looking for the skin lightening products sold by the prestige lines. In their culture having a tanned face comes with the stigma of being a “field / farm worker” whereas lighter skin is associated with being wealthy enough that you did not have to work the fields. Light skin conveys a higher status in society.

That may explain the full face masks on the beach.

She also heard of Caucasian ladies using the cream to lighten their nether regions…for what purpose was never explained.

    • I understand their logic. It highlights the differences from culture to culture where North Americans are frequently looking to acquire a tan.

  2. They look like frikkin burn victims. Good god!

And as for that contest… NOT open to Canadians. So I might have to ‘un’ like their page as that bugs me to no end. There’s plenty of contests that are open to US and Canadian residents, so it can’t be that hard to do.

  3. Is that Bigfoot in the black and orange?

  4. Face-kini!? WTF, I double checked it’s not April 1st.

  5. WTF? Couldn’t they just do whatever it is they are doing inside? The thought of a “facekini” with a “conchkini” makes me want to poke out my mind’s eye. If you feel the need to cover your face, you most likely need to cover everything, such as with the bodysuit in the photo. That’s like taking a shower in a raincoat. Reminds me of a song by The Refreshments…”The World Is Full Of Stupid People”.

    • I think that if you are concerned about tanning your face, a body suit only makes sense too.

      • Strange enough, I Googled it after reading this blog post and there are a lot of pics of women wearing normal swim suits and bikinis but still wearing the face cover. Talk about strange.
