Get toasted
Many of the simple things that are taken for granted in a house become complicated on a boat that has limited electrical resources. Take making toast for example. I have seen several threads on various cruisers forums asking the question “what is the best way to make toast?” Boats with huge electrical banks and inverters could of course, simply use an electric toaster. But like other appliances that heat things up (hair dryers, coffee makers, etc.), they draw a lot of current. I have read that others recommend frying bread to make quasi-toast. We have found the best method is to use a camping-style toaster on our propane stove. The one we have is the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Toaster and it can perfectly toast 2 pieces of bread in about 30 seconds per side.
Cool! Nice to know as we like english muffins with cheese. I love how you always find something neat to share with everyone!
I love english muffins and cheese too.
Let them eat toast!!
We had one of those when we were a family that camped and all it ever did was dry it out to the point that it had the texture and appearance of stale bread.
Here’s a camping trick from my dear old departed dad:
After toasting bread, set it on top of your cup/mug of coffee. It re-moisturizes the toast while keeping it warm and the coffee hot until ready for consumption. 😉
Love that tip, Kirk!
Great idea……I don’t even own a toaster at my house….Yes, part of the prunning process…..
We had an electric toaster here on ZTC (it came with the boat). We gave it away 2 weeks ago.
When we were young my Dad used to joke that we didn’t have any bread so we would have to eat toast! Figuered out as I grew older though.lol
hehe
We’ve pretty much given up toast. But I confess to missing toasted English muffins, saturated with butter… (I’m making myself hungry here).

This thing works well, Bob.
A toasting fork is also handy. Of course, you have to hold it, and watch the toast. However, it can double as a toaster for hot dogs, marshmallows, or fish. And it works well over a campfire.
mmmmm…. marshmallows!
I love toast, I love garlic toast, and I nearly bought a nifty little galley toast thingy for something like 30 bucks but didn’t. Right now all I do is butter my bread, add garlic powder (if it’s not for breakfast) and then toss it into a pan on top of my propane stove. Unfortunately it’s not quite the same but I’ll take it anyway. If only I could come up with a way to dry my hair using this method!
LOL
