I’m not sure which is sexier
I’m not sure which is sexier…
several hot women on our boat…
or our new Wirie Wi-Fi amp.
Answer to yesterday’s question:
A Mayday call should be put out only when a vessel, vehicle, aircraft or person is in grave and imminent danger. A Pan Pan message is used when there is some very urgent message to transmit concerning the safety of a vessel, vehicle, aircraft or person. Also, a Mayday call is broadcasted, meaning that it is not directed to any station in particular. A Pan Pan on the other hand is supposed to be addressed to someone although in many cases that someone is “All ships.”
Today’s question:
What is the name for the thin wispy clouds high in the sky?
Looks like you’re really suffering down there in Grenada on the boat…..
It is tough at times.
and none are single??????????
The Wirie may be.
We were just looking at The Wirie last week! Since it’s been created by other cruisers, we’d love to support them once we’re ready to make a purchase.
I think you’d be happy with it.
Cirrus clouds
Correct!
I’m pretty confident I can answer that “which is sexier question” for you Mike!
Yeah, I’ve got it figured out too. 🙂
You can make the Wirie yourself for less than $70. The same components can be bought and assembled, from the Practical Sailor 11/2010 issue: Alfa AWUS036H wifi card, 6db antenna, and an otter box with a pvc tube to house the antenna. Download the driver from realtek.com for the card’s chipset, a Realtek 8187L. I did it and mine works great with my Macbook Pro! I get wifi signals from across the bay here in Colonial Beach.
The high clouds are generally Cirrus clouds, further grouped into cirrostratus, altocirrus, etc. and have the wispy appearance because they are tiny ice crystals spread out by winds aloft. More commonly they are known often as “Mares Tails”. Often they are at the leading edge of a frontal system.

Re: Clouds:
Correct!
Nice pictures. Those clouds dont look too cirrus to me.
Those particular ones certainly do not.
To answer the question requires another question. Which photo involves more wood? 😉
BTW, the wood you purchased in Annapolis seems to be holding up well.
Funny thing about the wood. We had taken them off the rail, sanded them and got all ready to put another coat of stain on them. When we pulled out the can that we thought contained the stain, we found that it was white latex primer. I have no idea why we were carrying that around with us! We finally decided to just say screw it and leave the boards natural. After I put them all back on, we then found the actual container of stain (wood sealer actually). Typical.
Yeah, tough call. I’m thinking the lovely lady with the beer though, can’t beat that combo.
Not bad logic.
I purchased my wiire about 8 months ago. I recently had to return it for replacement.
I would drop off the windows device map and lose connection intermittantly. They shipped a replacement as soon as they received my defective unit. That’s real good customer service.
I did a bunch of research to fiqure out what was going bad. two things they don’t tell you in the manuel 1. disable any other onboard wifi controller before installing your wiire, it seems to
confuse windows ver. 7 if they are both trying to load drivers (realtex) together.
2. don’t be tempted to push the transmit power all the way to 100 percent. that tends to
cause the unit to overheat, and being inside a waterpoof housing can’t be good.
But all in all I like my wiire and find it very good at picking up weak signals.
Oh, on other item. They ship the unit with a small antenna and usb cable.
don’t lose them. They are needed for troubleshooting if something goes wrong.
Thanks for that info!
That WirieAP sure looks sexy and doesn’t even need sunglasses! 🙂
I thought you might think that. 🙂
The clouds you speak of are called Cirrus clouds.
Correct Steve.
so are they called” Mikes Angels” ?lol
It has a nice ring to it.
Mike, I think Rebecca should smack you for that comment. And the clouds are cirrius, pronounced “serious”.
She thinks the Wire is sexy too. As for the clouds, that’s close. They are Cirrus, not CirrIus.
I’ll consider this post my birthday present. Thanks!
Happy birthday Ken. Mine too!
Happy birthday Gentlemen.
i’m a chick myself, but definitely the chicks are sexier! The beer is a close second..followed by the Wirie.
🙂
Mike,
I’m confused. The wirie is thte same USB external ALFA unit you already have. It is just placed inside a pelican waterproof box. How did this solve your driver issue with the latest MacBook update. Your existing Alfa 036 with the cantina has better gian and directionality then the wirie??
After visiting Wirie’s site, I’m betting your product is the Wirie AP (access point). That would eleviate needing a USB driver for any PC. Since you would just connect to the device with any PC or devices WiFI capability. However, the Wirie AP does draw a small amount of DC to operate the Internal access point and wifi adapter. Easiest & quickest route I guess.
Yes, WirieAP. As I described here:

what wifi? what question? woo is it warm in here?
