As if our having to worry about storms, whales and pirates wasn’t enough, now we have to concern ourselves with volcanoes! Yes, smack dab in the middle of the rhumb line between Carriacou and the leeward corner of Grenada is Kick ‘Em Jenny, an active underwater volcano, and we’re sailing right by it as I am posting this.

A big eruption when we’re nearby would certainly be bad but the chances of that happening are pretty remote I think (the volcano last erupted in 2001). How is this for scary though… even in times when the volcano is not erupting, it can still be releasing gasses. From what I’ve read, if a high enough amount of these gasses are released, it can lower the water density above the volcano causing anything in the water to SINK. Yes, boats can sink, life jackets can sink and people can sink! Now that is scary! Kinda Bermuda Triangle stuff.

The charts show a 1.5 mile exclusion zone around the underwater volcano that mariners are supposed to stay clear of (it expands to 5 miles in times of greater volcanic activity). Although many people ignore this safety zone, we’re staying well clear. I kind of prefer our boat staying above the water!

Tyrell Bay, our 2nd anchorage in Carriacou. I just can’t escape these freakin’ hills!

Simon, the “oyster guy,” delivering us a dozen fresh ones. They were tasty!

Our friends had told us about this boat. They will come and raft up to you and do any stainless steel fabrication that you need. I think they could use some new fenders though.

Nothing like cheap wine…

…and sunsets at anchor!

On route… Grenada in the background and Kick ‘Em Jenny (underwater) just up ahead.

Is that rainbow welcoming us to Grenada?

  1. We’d be keeping our distance from Kick Em Jenny too! Beautiful pictures … love the anchorage and sunset ones. Oysters … mmmm! Have you ever tried them on the grill with a pat of butter and a little garlic? So good!

  2. Can you smell the cocoa yet?

  3. Hey guys, love following your blog. Just wondering have you guys met up with s/v windtraveler? I read there blog also and see that they are passing over Kick em Jenny about the same time you guys are.

    • Yes, we met Brittany and Scott back in Georgetown and have been leapfrogging each other all the way down. They are in a nearby marina so I’m sure will catch up with them in the not too distant future.

  4. Glad you made is safely to Grenada. Have a great visit.

  6. Of all the ‘blogs’ of people sailing in that area, that is the first mention I have ever seen of ‘Kick ’em Jenny’. Fascinating.

  7. […] Kick ‘em Jenny.  The only active sub-marine volcano in the Active Arc of the Lesser Antilles.  They wrote a quick blog post about it.  Which got me to thinking more about […]
