We learn from others, but create our own path
It’s been a while since we’ve found ourselves anchored in Tyrell Bay, Carriacou with a few days to play. Those who know us could have won some money betting that, with some free time on our hands, we’d eventually find ourselves up on top of the highest hill in the area.
Chapeau Carre, the second highest hill on Carriacou (by only 1 meter — High North is the tallest), overlooks the Tyrell Bay anchorage, and the islands south of Carriacou. The hike to its peak is one that we’ve done before, albeit a number of years ago. Unfortunately, this time around we made the mistake of trying to cobble together directions to the trailhead from a couple different sources, instead of following the info laid out on Chris Doyle’s website exclusively. That resulted in us starting the hike from a completely different point, and having to forge our own trail until we were half way up the mountain.
Chris Doyle’s The Sailors Guide to the Windward Islands is a must have for cruisers in this area!
As you can imagine, that error, and the extra bit of challenge that came with it, just increased the fun for the two of us, and added to the adventure. While we’re perfectly happy learning from others, we’re just as pleased to be forced to figure things out on our own. That’s true when hiking, but I believe it’s just as true for life itself.
Nice plug for Chris’ books Mike + the links to purchase. We make huge use of these & kudos to Chris for the work he puts into them.
Yes, as I said, they are a “must have” for cruisers down here.
