Sometimes doing things on this blog are so easy, and yet other times they take a bit more work. For example, yesterday one of our new readers asked in a comment if there was an easy way to get to the very beginning of the blog and read forward. This is something that has stumped me for some time. Of course I could link to the first post in the blog but there is no way to navigate to the next post from that spot. With a bunch of clicking, I was able to find the first page on the blog but that link changes as I continue to post here. So, being that I had no answer, I posted the “how to” question on the Zero To Cruising Facebook page, hoping that some of my more computer-savvy friends could help. Wonderfully, many of them jumped at the chance to help, either giving suggestions or promising to do research. This morning I awoke to find that our friend and fellow cruiser Tucker had just the answer I was looking for. Thanks so much!

So, if you’re at all interested in starting from the very beginning of this whole ordeal, and reading forward in chronological order, you can now do so.

Warning: There are now over 1000 posts here and over 3500 images. You’d better make a fresh pot of coffee if you intend to go through the entire thing in one sitting.

I’m pretty lonely here now that Rebecca’s been gone almost a week but I think the three guys on the boat beside ZTC just might be a bit more lonely. Or then again, perhaps not. 😉

  1. THAT, is awesome! I’ve tried to do this on so many blogs and have had nothing but frustration. Too bad all blogs couldn’t easily be set up like that, or can they?

  2. I am goingto add to this mike…..Is there a “start from the begining” link that you can put in the sidebar so it is always there…..If you dont read this thread, no one will be able to do it…

  3. I thought the doll was a real woman at first.

  4. EXCELLENT! Glad there was a way to do it!

  5. When I started reading your blog, I found the first one fairly easily but what frustrated me was, I thought I was reading them all but then some things didn’t make sense and I then realized that not all of your posts for a month were showing up on one page… it took me a long time to realize that and so I had to go back and start again.

I checked to see how it was lined up at ‘start from the beginning, and I like it that you now have buttons at the end of the page for ‘older entries’ and ‘newer entries’. But here’s something for you to figure out… when you hit the ‘start from the beginning’ button and then scroll down to the very bottom of the page it takes you to, the only button at the bottom is the ‘older entries’ one. When you click on it, it takes you to a newer entry. Hmmm. So I went to the bottom of that page and hit the ‘older entries’ and IT took me to a newer entry and when I went back and hit the ‘newer entries’ button, it took me back to the beginning. So it seems the function of those two buttons are backwards.

That will give you something to do today so you don’t miss Rebecca quite so much!

    • Those words are mislabeled but they do function properly. When at the beginning of the blog, sorted chronologically as I posted today, hit “older entries” to go forward. Just keep hitting that link and you’ll move forward towards the present.

  6. That labeling could be fixed but it would require a bit of programming. For what it would cost to fix it, I don’t think it’s worth it, but maybe I’ll feel diferently after I do this on my blog 🙂

    • Usually I am anal about details but I wouldn’t invest any time in this. I don’t think it’s a big deal at all. People can figure it out.

  7. Yay! I am TOTALLY going to make that pot of coffee and settle in for a good stalking session! So much to learn…

  8. I remember stumbling across your blog just a few days after we took Shoal Survivor for her sea trials. I was amazed at the boldness of your plan, yet believed it would happen based upon the tune of voice, focus, and preparations you were making. And I’ll be damned if it didn’t.

    Bully!

You know, it’s going to be hard to top this one. That is the trouble with adventures. Or the best part.

  9. A friend for Bruce!!! He would love her!!!;)

  10. Hi Guys
It’s very rare to read a blog in this fashion!
I’ve been reading this “from the beginning” for over a week now.
    You Guys are very inspirational!
    Happy cruising
    Tom

  11. I found your blog kinda by accident about a month and a half ago, and have been addicted ever since. ( Spent one whole Sunday nothing but reading on my phone) I’ve got a hundred questions but I’m waiting til I catch up with you (I’m still a year and a half behind) and I figure you’ve answered them.

The buttons work great, there was no confusion for me and I’m not that bright.

The one question that you begining to address is what it costs. I know thats a sore spot for alot of cruisers but , what I want to see is how much is milk, eggs, a hamburger I;m really not intrested in what you spend I’m worried about what I’ll spend. Your pic’s are all awsome but the one I checked out the longest was of the menu board. I’m also more intrested in what you and Rebecca fix for dinner on the boat nights when there theres no fish biting.

Thanks for the awsome blog. I hope to join/follow in a few more years.

    • Hi Tom

      Thanks for reading.

The following post details my thoughts on the subject of money:

      http://www.zerotocruising.com/how-much-water-does-it-take-to-go-cruising/

There are islands where food, etc. is cheap and there are islands where that is not the case. You’ll figure that out when you’re down here easy enough.

What do we eat? The same as you, I suspect. There are grocery stores everywhere, some the same as they have in north america. Rebecca prepares excellent, healthy meals. I eat pretty well!

  12. I happened upon your blog while looking into my retirement dream (many years away) and decided to start from the beginning after a few posts!

I’m a little sad to admit that it took me a few days of reading the hard way before I noticed the “start from the beginning” link.

I love your blog and, if my wife doesn’t kill me, will continue to catch up on all you two are doing!

    Cheers!

    • Yeah, that link to the beginning sure does make it easier, doesn’t it? Good luck making your way through the blog now that you’ve found it. 🙂

  13. I found your blog recommended on best sailing blogs a few weeks ago and am addicted! I still have a year and a half to catch up with (though have to admit I know what you are up to now though facebook!). Good luck in your new venture!!
Your blog makes me laugh, made me cry once and reminds me every day of how important it is to live life to the full!! Just wanted to say thanks for giving us a bit of inspiration and some great photos!!!
From a future cruiser who gets out on the water a much as possible in the meantime!!

  14. Hi Mike

Hope not either!! Think my husband will be relieved when I get through the next 18 months of blog – he keeps having to sit and listen to me reading yet another great post aloud – the leaking head stories take a lot of beating!!!

Good luck with hauling ZTC tomorrow!

Best wishes from a wet and windy UK – we had 29 knots sailing in the Solent today and a max of 15 degrees centigrade (think that’s 59 f in your language!) – this is summer where we are!!!
