Maintenance 101
Last night was the first class in my Marine Maintenance course put on by the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron. As expected, I am by far the least experienced person in our class of approximately 14 or so boaters, both when it comes to maintenance-type experience and boating experience. Oh well, I’m there to learn, not teach, so perhaps this will make it easier for me to take home something of value.
As in the Seamanship course we are taking, night one began without anyone having their manuals. They really should try to find a solution for that as it makes the first session a bit disorganized. Regardless, after introductions and formalities, we discussed the use of epoxy resin for fiberglass repair. Surprisingly enough, I was not totally oblivious to this subject having already done some reading and DVD research on West Systems products. Book smarts… got em. Practical experience… coming.
Tonight Rebecca and I will be back in class for day 2 of the Seamanship course. We dug out our nautical chart for this area (#2064), have our copy of the Chart #1 publication (this book lists all of the symbols on nautical charts) and our dividers. Now we just need to remember what we covered in class last week!
Mike, being the least experienced in anything is nothing to worry about. I figure it is a sign of a man/woman who is not afraid to tread in strange and wonderful new directions.
Do you want to be a savant in one field of expertize? Or a well rounded person who can adapt to shifting enviroments without blinking an eye? I categorize you two in the latter.
Allan
Thanks Allan. I appreciate the words of support! I would like to think that we are in the latter category too.
I’ve been sailing (boating) for about 40= years; from Maine to the Caribbean and I don’t recognize some of those symbols.
You will do fine!
Kirk
Dear Rebecca and Mike,
Great to have found your website, we started the same process and it’s always inspiring to see that another couple is doing the same.
Good luck
Hello!
I just went to your blog to find out your names and I see that you are keeping it on the QT right now. That is awesome. If you read the first posts on our blog you would see that we were doing exactly the same thing, having not disclosed anything to even our friends and family back then. I’m looking forward to reading and following your progress!
Mike
