As Christmas day for us will be spent navigating busy airports on our way South we were happy to be able to assemble our family together this past weekend. Although they know about our trip to learn to sail they know nothing of our long-term plans. Rebecca “almost” told them but once again we felt that we would have a bit more credibility if we first complete our course.

The irony of this is that only minutes after arriving Rebecca’s father presented me with a book: The Voyage of the Northern Magic: A Family Odyssey, by Diane Stuemer. The book is a true account of a Canadian family who packed up everything to sail around the world. Having only read the first chapter thus far it seems amazingly similar to what we are going through, or will be going through. Do you think that her father knows more than what he is letting on, or is he just trying to get rid of us?

  1. I have pretty much every book from anyone who sailed around the world and wrote a book about it. This one is my absolute favorite. Which is your and Rebecca’s favorites? I’m going back through your blog from day 1 forward, and you have mentioned a few that I have now ordered on Amazon :o)

    • While not exactly about “sailing around the world,” an Embarrassment of Mangoes is probably our most-read book. Both of us have been through it multiple times.

  2. I just completed reading your book: The Voyage of the Northern Magic. A Family Odyssey. It was a book that was earmarked with tests of wills, emotions, triumphs, and sacrifices. The voyage itself was an eye-opener to man’s understanding of self, skills, and patience. And I feel most comfortable in knowing that they got to see the terrible events going on the world over, and yet coming to see in each their own hearts that “love” is not come from material possessions but from one’s heart. Thank You. Diane / Herbert Stuemer & Family. I would love to see or meet you one of these days, Good willing. Sincerely Mr.L.Cardinal , Edmonton, Ab.
