It’s not a plane, it’s not a drone, it’s Birdie!
As much as I love looking at cool aerial footage, I’ll admit it, I’m not yet ready to invest the money to purchase a drone. I also feel like I have enough complicated things in my life right now, and am not too interested in adding to that list. That said, I stumbled across this cool new device yesterday, and while it’s in no way as versatile as a drone, it’s infinitely less complex, and much more in our price range. Could be fun. Just don’t get it caught in your rigging! 🙂
I agree – the cost and complexity have been a deterrent for us as well. This looks like it has potential… I wonder what the ratio of good to goofy pics would be, since it’s so randomly taking photos. But I like goofy pics, so I guess it’s irrelevant – other than the time spent deleting the bad pics.
It’s a clever idea. I love creative solutions.
I’m not sold. But i makes me think you could invent a halyard based version.
The drones just have a steep learning curve and then once you get there, they are easy and low maintenance. I have one, a cheap knockoff of a phantom.. I do think drones get over used in boring aerial videos and they tend to attract undo and unwanted attention.
That steep learning curve you mention has turned out to be extremely expensive for friends of ours!
Speaking of halyards though, I made this:

Does that thing come also with multi-stage booster rockets?
Aftermarket accessories?
Somehow throwing my camera in the air while attached to a badminton birdie on steroids
just doesnt seem like a great idea. Perhaps some fishing line and a piece of material to make
a parachute for 2 dollars would work just as well and probably have more air time. The camera
and a piece of “noodle” for floatation and impact softening would work well on a kite also. Not
impressed with the plastic birdie.
So, you’re saying that you won’t be buying one then?
