Far be it for us to deliberately upset Poseidon but the Leopard’s former name Serendipity had to go. The new name One Love was, in fact, chosen long before we ever closed on the boat. Legally the boat has already been registered One Love with White Bay, Jost Van Dyke as her home port. Physically though, she is not yet sporting her new moniker.

Removing the vinyl letters of the old name was not all that difficult. With a bit of time and a strong finger nail it all came off. As always happens though, there is still a bit of discoloration between the areas previously hidden by the letters and that around them which has been exposed to the elements. Rebecca spent some time with rubbing compound to try to minimize that difference.

Our big challenge was what to do with the red and blue Moorings stripes. Unlike vinyl stripes which could be removed as easily as the letters, these appear to be painted on or imbedded into the gelcoat. I consulted The Oracle as I always do and came up with the strange suggestion to use Easy Off Oven Cleaner to remove the paint. We even went so far as to purchase a can at the grocery store. As the idea sounded a bit sketchy, I decided to first post an inquiry on the ZTC Facebook Page, asking if anyone had experience with it. Several people actually had tried it, with very mixed reviews.

Yesterday morning an idea came to me on how we could incorporate the stripes into our design. What you see below is my Photoshop representation. The red and blue stripes will be covered with yellow and green vinyl and our logo will be applied over them. We think it will look awesome, and better still, we have no stripes to scrub off!

  1. Awesome idea. Much simpler and safer to cover the stripes rather than attempt to remove the stripes. Once you start the removal process, there is no going back. And two long stripes on both sides of the boat is a lot of stripe to remove.

  2. Work smart not hard – perfect.

  3. Perfect solution and looks great.

  4. Not only a great idea, the logo is terrific. Nice effort you guys had in the design of the logo.

  5. I think the stripes add allot to the graphics, good choice.

  6. Great idea Mike and Rebecca…….The way vinyl adhesive is today, it will out live us…

  7. The green and yellow look great!

  8. In fact, the whole logo looks fantastic. Did you design that?

  9. I “One Love” the palms making the “V”. Very clever.

  10. Terrific! And I agree with a commenter above who said that the new green/yellow stripes add to the design!

You sure you guys didn’t do graphic design in your previous lives?

    • No, but I do pay attention to good design and I know what reproduces well on a variety of mediums. I like that logo because it looks great even in black and white.

  11. You guys sure you don’t want to do graphic design in your current lives?

  12. I wonder if you saw my response regarding a wider decal to cover the two stripes? Your idea is even better…sounds like a great solution!

    • I’m sure I did get it. Thanks. We initially didn’t consider covering the stripes as an option because we had planned for the large logo to take up that entire space. As it turns out, leaving them there but changing the color adds to the effect.

  13. Awesome job guys! You might talk to the manufacturer of the vinyl striping and see if there is a recommended top coat. It makes it a little shinier, but prevents foreign materials from becoming attached to the edges of the vinyl. I am not sure if Moorings used to do this as on our 46, the stripes were also gel coat.

  14. We overlayed our mid-hull stripe with vinyl and it worked great! One thing though, if the overlay stripe is bigger, you will be able to see the outline of the old when it gets squeegeed down and, if there are any nicks in the old, you will be able to see them too. Being the OC type, I ended up peeling the boot stripe off and said forget it with trying to match it up exactly. We came up with something totally different, with non-linear accents because no matter how hard we tried (3-4 times, minimum), we could never get it “just right.”

Sorry we missed you while you were in CO! I wanted to drive down to meet you but was sitting at an Open House, trying to sell our house, so that we can someday sail away too! Good luck with your new adventure!

    • I think you’re referring to covering vinyl stripes with other vinyl stripes, right? On this boat you can’t feel the stripe at all. The color is in the gelcoat, or at least appears that way.

Instead of CO we’ll have to meet somewhere down island then. Make it happen! 🙂

  15. I am puzzled as to why you say the old name ‘had to go’. This has been said on other blogs about other boats too. Is this some American regulatory thing that the name must change and be registered somewhere if the ownership changes? It is relatively rare to change a name here.

  16. Very attractive.

  17. Happy colors!!!!! Like!

  18. Well done! The stripes definitely add to the new logo. I approve. (Not that you need my approval.) 🙂

  19. Mid-Life Cruising!

Catching up … love the logo!

  20. Guys, the idea of covering the stripes looks great! Believe us when we tell you that you have taken the best and easiest option there!!! 3 weeks of blood, sweat and tears got rid of ours and WAY to much money!! They are in the gelcoat and are a total pain in the ^*~*
