I know that we’re no different in this respect from anyone else but having some sunshine the last two days for our run down the Jersey coast was soooo appreciated!

After two long days of (motor) sailing, we made it Cape May. Although we’re definitely not trying to rush our trip south, we were trying to get this run completed as quickly as possible. For this reason, we chose to run our engines even though the winds were favorable. Motor sailing with both the main and jib up allowed us to keep an average speed of about 8 knots. When the winds picked up to the point where we would be doing over 9 knots, we would throttle down or turn them off all together. When the winds died, which they did for a portion of each day’s traveling, we would run both engines (Typically while traveling we only run one of our two engines to conserve fuel, etc. We switch the engines every hour to balance the load).

From Barneget Bay we “could” have stopped at Atlantic City but even though we had an anchorage picked out in case the weather forced us there, we opted to bypass the casinos and head right to Cape May. Last night was spent at Utsch’s Marina and we took full advantage of their services (electricity, water, showers, laundry, nearby* shopping). Today we’re off to find some place to anchor.

This is as close as we came to Atlantic City. Sorry Mr. Trump.

*Nearby is relative. The store seemed much closer when we weren’t carrying 200 lbs. of groceries!

  1. Wow, was unaware NJ was so “green” (wind generators). Guess they got some federal tax credits eh?

  2. I just thought of something…the title of this blog entry makes me think of John Denver…should I tell people that? 😉

  3. Barneget Inlet! Your photo shows almost flat water going in other than the fishing !@#@#@ boats, when we went in it was oposing tide & water over the bow, now that was a scarey 5 minutes, we did get protection from a NICE fishing boat behind us, who blocked other boats from passing us as we were having so much trouble fighting the waves. Following morning you could have used the inlet to play pool!

  4. How long do you plan to stay in Cape May?
Just a heads up, most likely you are about to stop using your water maker for a good while. Or go thru a lot of filters. We are currently anchored in Swan Creek.. North side of Rock Hall on the Eastern Shore. Could be a nice stop for you. You can dinghy in to Haven Harbor marina. For $20 you can use the facilities for the day including bikes to ride into town.
Of course, many other great stops. Fabulous weather for at least the next 6 days. Have fun.

    • I need to get our charts out and find out where this is.

We are just about to leave to go anchor near the mooring field on the other side of the bay. I think we’ll head out into the Delaware Bay tomorrow.

  5. You didn’t miss much by skipping Atlantic City. Enjoy the lovely weather and casual pace from here…

  6. Pete & Suzanne Evans

Good weather until Earl comes up the coast. Should be off the NC coast around Thursday. We’re headed east to secure our boat.

Your pics are great. We are really enjoying your blog!

  7. Stay safe! This is NOT the Duke of Earl!

  8. AHHH, Good old Cape MAY!, Did plenty of pushups there in US Coast Guard Boot Camp!, spent a lot of time looking at the ground there!, LOL
